The Blaeu family: Willem and two sons Joan and Cornelius. The Blaeu publishing house was established in Amsterdam in 1596. Blaeu was appointed official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company during the period 1638-1673. Many figures on these maps were drawn by artists from the Breughel and Rembrandt studios. The following examples of Blaeu's mastery come from the 1640 Latin edition of the Theatrvm Orbis Terrarum. The atlas frontispiece states that these maps were published by the Blaeu sons, Joan and Cornelius.
